Darra Project

We're building

First Co-Housing Community Takes Shape

Construction is underway on our first co-housing community for five older women at Darra in the southern suburbs of Brisbane. Our vision extends beyond housing construction; this will be an intentional community where the residents can live with dignity, autonomy and mutual support.

Sharing with Friends’ unique approach to co-housing & lifetime leases can help address the deplorable number of older women at risk of homelessness.

Darra Project Snapshot

  • Small-scale co-housing
  • 5 x independent studio units with a larger shared space for communal living, set in a
    residential neighbourhood
  • Self-management

Innovative, Long-Term & Affordable

  • Land purchase funded through philanthropy / gifting
  • Housing contribution from residents in return for a 50-year lease
  • Construction funded by resident contribution
  • Residents will cover ongoing property costs
  • Simple exit arrangements to preserve capital value of original contribution

More than a just building project

Using the Darra development as the prototype, we hope to inspire lasting change and serve as a model for many future seniors co-housing communities. This is more than a project; it's a movement towards a world where all older women can live with security, dignity and respect.

Excited Future Residents

Our first five residents have signed on, and can't wait to move in! Sharing with Friends would like to acknowledge the resilience of these women as they've endured the many delays in the building approval process.

“I’m most looking forward to having security, and I think we’ll surprise even ourselves how well we’ll thrive as a community together.”

~ Ann (future resident)
